Paxil is a medication that contains paroxetine hydrochloride, which is an SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor). As for the long-term efficacy of Paxil, it was established in a long-term extension to study 1. [1] Patients who responded to Paxil during the 3-month double-blind phase and a 6-month extension on open-label Paxil 20mg to 60mg daily were randomized to continue on Paxil or switch to placebo.
It is important to note that Paxil should not be used in children under the age of 18 years old, except in specific cases. It should also be used with caution in patients with a history of suicidal thoughts or behavior. It is also not recommended for patients taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) or for at least 14 days after stopping an MAOI.
Paxil may cause side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, constipation, headache, dry mouth, increased sweating, dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision, sleep problems, agitation, and decreased sex drive. These side effects usually go away after a few weeks of treatment.
It is also important to inform your doctor about any other medications you are taking, as well as any other medical conditions you have, before starting treatment with Paxil.
